Jerry Salas started playing guitar when he was about ten, and singing even younger. He was taught and inspired by his father Bill and brother Curly. Through his father and brother Jerry was exposed to a wide range of music, Country Western, Hawaiian and Mariachi from dad who played in all these types of groups professionally, and Rock and Roll, R&B and Jazz from brother Curls. Throw in a little Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett from uncle Ray who had a beautiful voice and there you have it.

Grammy Museum screening of "Chicano Rock" and panel discussion-  On Tuesday, May 19th at 7 p.m. there will be a screening of the documentary "Chicano Rock: The Sounds of East Los Angeles." A panel discussion will follow the screening with panelists Jon Wilkman (director or the documentary), Mark Guerrero, David Reyes (co-author of the book "Land of a Thousand Dances"), Louie Perez of Los Lobos, Ruben Molina (author of "Chicano Soul"), and Max Uballez (leader of 60s East L.A. band, The Romancers). Luis Torres will moderate the discussion. The Grammy Museum is located at 800 West Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles (near Staples Center).

Q-VO's  Classic Low Riders Car Clubs-Series
Q-VO (roughly translated as hello or what’s happening) and Firme ( . . . cool or solid as in the English vernacular) Magazine made Chicano/Latino publishing history in the wake of another grassroots Chicano publishing phenomena, Lowrider Magazine. The inaugural issue of Q-VO presented as El Papel De La Gente, was published in May, 1976 in Riverside, California and became QVO Magazine, continued publishing successfully with a growing readership until 1994. Since their inception, the mainstay of the content of both magazines, Q-VO and Firme was a unique blend of Chicano/Latino cultural elements -- customized cars (lowriders), Latina beauty, Latino entertainment coverage, Chicano/Latino social documentation, history, barrio art and humor – and the publications’ most controversial element, ample documentation and coverage of Chicano (Mexican American political activism.) Commensurate with this coverage was a consistent message promoting education, community empowerment and the end of gang warfare in the Latino community. In fact, it was because it was perceived as counter to this dual message, neither publication accepted advertising proposals from liquor beverage manufacturers and distributors throughout their publishing history. Both publications featured beautiful professional and nonprofessional models that were typically Latina. In fact the expressed editorial preference for glorifying and staging Latino feminine beauty and sexuality was a primary factor in gaining a largely Latino (at the time . . . young) blue collar male readership. Q-VO and Firme were trailblazers in presenting and promoting budding Latino performers, actors, singers who were unknown and who were having a difficult time getting coverage from mainstream media. Amongst some of the artists that have risen to stardom far beyond their humble beginnings, people that Q-VO featured in the seminal stages of their careers, we find Edward James Olmos, Patricia Appollonia Kotero, Paul Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Selena. Some of the lesser known, “underground artists” include Aztlan Underground. It is important to point out that Q-VO and Firme prospered completely outside of the corporate publishing mainstream. Neither magazine ever relied on any kind of government or non-profit subsidizing. Perhaps not to their business advantage in the emerging global economy, neither magazine sought sponsorship or subsidies from major publishing conglomerates. (In contrast Low Rider Magazine courted and eventually was bought by Primedia and distributed nationally and globally). Both publications attained commercial success through a winning and unique content formula that consistently earned a growing readership that peaked at 750,000. Direct distribution, subscriptions and local advertising were sources of revenue throughout both magazines’ successful publishing history. Both magazines built their readership without ever molting their original look and style. In their later phases, they improved their printing stock and incorporated more color but they never mutated into the more “refined” look of mainstreamed publications. This consistency served to anchor loyalty in a readership that no other publication with socially relevant content was targeting. Luis J. Rodriguez, the well-known writer acknowledges Q-VO Magazine as one of the early links to literacy that helped him rise to self-awareness and out of the self-destruction of the gang lifestyle.

Although she was born in New York, Christina Aguilera grew up in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. Her father is of Ecuadoran descent and her mother is of European descent. Aguilera's parents divorced before she was 10, and Christina moved in with her grandmother. Christina Aguilera had a precocious talent for singing. She competed in the television show Star Search in 1990 at age 9. She did not win, but became somewhat of a local celebrity.

At the Battle of Churubusco in 1847, the San Patricios met their end. Of approximately 200 men, 35 were killed and 85 were taken prisoner. Nearly 50 prisoners were sentenced to death by hanging. Riley escaped execution because he had deserted prior to the declaration of war. He was merely given 50 lashes on the back, branded with the letter “D” (for deserter), and forced to wear an iron yoke around his neck for the duration of the war.

 All told around 1000 Irish deserted the army before and during the war. They were not the first soldiers to do so, but 200 of them did the unforgivable. They banded together and enlisted with their fellow Catholics in the Mexican Army.

A fascinating chapter in American history is the story about the St. Patrick's Battalion of Irishmen fighting on the side of Catholic Mexico in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Irish families fleeing the Potato Famine in their native land and seeking refuge in the United States were guaranteed U.S. citizenship if they volunteered one son for service in the US Army. By the early 1840s a significant proportion of the enlisted men in the United States Army were Catholic immigrants from Ireland. These Irish Catholic recruits were severely maltreated in the Army because of the notorious prejudice against immigrants, especially Catholic immigrants, at that time in America. The Mexican government, aware of this prejudice, started a campaign during the Mexican-American War to win the foreigners and Catholics to its cause.

At age 9, she sang in the East Los Angeles restaurant El Mercadito, which marked the albeit small beginning of her public performing career. That same year, she performed at a retirement home in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and the following year, at age 10, she embarked on a semi-regular gig at another restaurant, El Taco Loco in Hawaiian Gardens. Initially she sang with a mariachi group which already performed at the restaurant, but soon she was in demand in her own right. In this context she accepted requests for songs from restaurant patrons, arranging to learn them for the following week if songs were requested with which she was unfamiliar.

  Cesar Estrada Chavez was born March 31, 1927, on a small farm near Yuma, Arizona. He learned about justice and injustice early in life. The small adobe home where he was born was swindled from his family by dishonest people. Chavez's father agreed to clear eighty acres of land and in exchange he would receive the deed to forty acres of land that adjoined the home. The agreement was broken and the land sold to a man named Justus Jackson. Chavez's dad went to a lawyer who advised him to borrow money and buy the land. Later, during the Depression, when Chavez's father could not pay the interest on the loan, the lawyer bought back the land and sold it to the original owner. Later, Chavez would say "the love for justice that is in us is not only the best part of our being but it is also the most true to our nature."

My name is Ignacio Gomez. I am a Chicano artist. Benjamin F. Hernandez for Lowrider Arte Magazine asked me to share my thoughts about Chicano Art and Raza Pride. Lowrider Arte Magazine reaches many new artists. I love to go out to schools and talk to the youth. I tell them that if they have the ability and love of art then they should go to art school. I hope that they go back to school and get a degree. It's hard to make a living doing murals. I encourage young artists to take some computer classes. Computer art classes will open up doors to the animation studios. There's so much talent in our Latino American youth and yet the studios like Disney and Dreamworks are going to England to recruit artists. We should be training our Raza to fill these jobs!

Lo encontré mientras ociosamente navegaba en la web, el titulo del video me llamo la atención, y es que a quien no le llamaría la atención un video que lleva por titulo “Como somos los mexicanos”; confieso que esperaba alguna sátira divertida con lo típico de: al mexicano le vale ver… la crisis y los problemas, por que ingeniosamente siempre sabe como alivianarse… el mexicano se ríe de la muerte tanto por que sabe que al final se va a morir… y bla bla el mexicano esto y el mexicano aquello, pero mi sorpresa fue grande al encontrar algo totalmente distinto a lo que esperaba.
